The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework that offers students an opportunity to build a range of skills and prepare for life outside of school. Benefiting framework users even after they have completed the program, Duke of Ed aids in the development of transferable skills across a range of fields, helping them become more physically active, volunteer in their community and undertake a team adventure. Users are challenged to make their own choices in designing their own unique program that helps them to find their purpose, passion and place in the world.
Sydney Girls High School is proud to offer its students the Duke of Ed as it aligns with our school values of diligence, perseverance, and integrity. It offers our students the opportunity to develop skills around personal strengths and passions and make a difference in their world, whilst forging qualities of strength, resolve and commitment. The Duke of Ed additionally plays a critical role in their development outside the classroom, allowing their achievement to be recognised worldwide through unique international accreditation of their experiences. Equipping our students for life and work, the framework has been beneficial for our school over decades of participation.
At our school, all Year 9 students use the framework and participate in the Duke of Ed Adventurous Journey. The framework starts at the Bronze Level with pathways to Silver and Gold, each composed of four sections - Skill, Service, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journeys. The Gold Level additionally requires a fifth section - The Gold Residential Project.
